How I Met Your Mother, berkisah tentang seorang pria , Ted Mosby, yang suatu hari memanggil kedua anaknya dan memutuskan untuk bercerita tentang bagaimana dia bertemu dengan istrinya, ibu dari kedua anak tersebut.

Namun, pada prakteknya, Ted bukan hanya bercerita tentang pertemuannya dengan ibu dari anak-anaknya, tapi juga menceritakan seluruh petualangan cintanya sebelum bertemu dengan ibu mereka.

Sesuai tagline-nya, “Love Story, In Reverse”, situasi komedi ini memang menceritakan berbagai macam flash back kisah cinta , lengkap dengan manis, konflik dan solusinya. Bukan hanya kisah Ted Mosby seorang, tetapi juga kisah orang2 di sekitarnya, Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) dan Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris).
